If you’re passionate about children and education and have been looking for an opportunity to make your next vacation a volunteer experience, Global Vision International (GVI) has a great program for you. India is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and many areas of the country are in desperate need of better educational opportunities for children.
One such place is Rajasthan, which is located in the northwestern part of India and known for its elaborate palaces and exotic colors. The town is one of many throughout the country facing extremely high illiteracy rates and a general lack of education, which has been linked to child labor and child marriages in those communities. But you can help make a difference by giving just a week of your time through an international voluntourism experience.
Through GVI, volunteers can work as short-term teaching assistants in both formal and informal local schools in this tribal town. Participants provide support and assistance to local school staff and child care centers, working with street kids and participating in health campaigns. While there, volunteers also have the option of attending Hindi lessons, enjoying local cultural performances and visiting the famed Taj Mahal. For more information about this trip, including video, images and stories from past participants, visit GVI’s website. –Carisa Turner
