The 25 Most Inspirational Travel Quotes

I was a voracious reader when I was growing up, typically reading two books a week on average.

My lower-middle class family didn’t have the money to do much in the way of traveling, outside of the occasional camping trip in north Georgia. My dad worked multiple jobs just to support his family of five. So I read books about adventure long before I had the financial means to start taking adventures of my own.

It was the written word that originally fueled my travel dreams, from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Books to Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. It was through Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, John Muir’s Our National Parksand Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Nature that I first developed a passion for the environment. And when I finally started traveling, the work of writers such as Jon Krakauer, Bill Bryson and  Paul Theroux influenced the way I did it.

So, for me, these inspirational travel quotes aren’t just words: They are the distillation of a philosophy that continues to drive my life and work, informing pretty much everything I do. I hope they will prove equally influential for you…   –Bret Love; photos by Bret Love & Mary Gabbett

  2. Nice collection of quotes. I’d like to come up with my own travel quote — one that takes my passion for travel and wraps it all up in a sentence. But I guess that many of us relate to a wide range of travel motivations — a combination of the feelings and thoughts of those quoted here and elsewhere.

  3. Great post, Bret and Mary! I am a collector of travel quotes as well, so I found many of these to be familiar, but there are a few that are new to me. I love this type of post, since I also love photography. Several of your excellent photos inspire me to go to Chile and to (gasp) Antarctica (can’t believe I said that, as a tropical travel writer!). I like the Pinterest idea, too.

  4. There is no doubt that travel has the ability to change your mindset however you have to open your mind first. I have many friends who stick to the same destinations because they provide the same home comforts that they can not go two weeks without. Travel is for everyone but some people fail to see it

  5. Excellent quotes … life is just one big trip … the times we spend at “home” are just bouts of slow travel!

  6. Ha hoo I love these quotes! Sure get me wanting to book a ticket and travel anywhere… probably Amsterdam ha hoo! Very inspirational, great curation.

  7. Hi guys

I found it hard to go past the first quote. In 20 years from now … I don’t want to live a life filled with regrets – if only I’d …

I have a bucket list sitting on my wall and there are quite a few travel travel related items on the list. Been to Georgia though : )

  8. Those are all moving, inspirational quotes. The one that hits me the most is the quote from Mary Anne Radmacher – “I’m not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” The photos, by the way are stunning.

  9. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” is my all-time favorite. It is so true!

  10. Travel is like air to us. We can’t breathe without.

Extract from book On the Road with Kids – to be released by Pan Macmillan in late 2014

  11. This quote really resonates with me:

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

One reason… I love Ralph Waldo Emerson. Another, because I used to think moving somewhere or visiting somewhere would solve all my problems. This quote reminds me that I must find my joy internally and not rely on a place. That way, I can enjoy my travels instead of pressuring them to solve my pains.

Thank you for all the great quotes!
